About the place
The castle stands on a hill at the edge of Bologa (Sebesvár in Hungarian), about 15 km from Huedin. Documents mention it from 1304; it was a royal castle on the road to Oradea, and according to the sources King Sigismund of Luxembourg gave it to Mircea the Elder of Wallachia in 1399. In 1660 Prince George II Rákóczi was brought here wounded after the battle of Florești. The castle was destroyed around 1709, leaving the round tower and part of the walls.
The ruins have been consolidated in recent years through a national rural development programme. You climb on foot, about ten minutes on a steep path, and entry was free according to 2025 reviews. On the hill across the stream lie the traces of the Roman fort of Resculum, from the 2nd and 3rd centuries. It holds 4.6 on Google from about 1,700 reviews.
