About the place

The house was built in the early 20th century and bought in 1927 by the lawyer Augustin Rațiu, later mayor of Turda. After 1948 the communists nationalised it and sent Augustin Rațiu to the Danube–Black Sea Canal labour camp; his son Ion Rațiu lived in exile in London and returned to Romania in 1990. Today the compound supports the work of the Rațiu Democracy Centre.

Each room tells the story of a family member and mixes rustic furniture with modern comfort and good mattresses. Breakfast is a buffet. In the same courtyard is the cultural café La Papion, named after Ion Rațiu's famous bow tie, with a gazebo over the stream. The History Museum is a five-minute walk away.
