About the place

Professor Alexandru Borza laid out the garden after 1919, and it opened to the public on 25 June 1925. Its roughly 14 hectares hold ornamental, phytogeographic, systematic and economic sections, the Japanese garden with a tea house on a small pond, and the Roman garden with remains from ancient Napoca. The Botanical Institute building, inaugurated in 1937, houses the Botanical Museum and the country's largest herbarium.

The large glasshouse complex of 1957–1960 has three houses open to visitors: equatorial plants, palms (16 m high) and Mediterranean and Australian plants. In 2026 the garden opens daily 9–17 from November to February and until 20:00 in summer; the glasshouses close an hour earlier. It receives more than 200,000 visitors a year.
