The people of Cluj have walked here for nearly two centuries, along shady avenues and past the lake with its island and the 1897 Casino.
About the place
The park's story starts in 1827, when the Women's Charitable Association rented the land by the Someș for a promenade; it opened to the public in the early 1830s. The Park Association, founded in 1865, laid out the avenues and dug the lake. In 1896–1897 the Cluj architect Lajos Pákei designed the Casino (the former kiosk), the skating pavilion on the lake, today the Chios restaurant, and the artesian fountain.
The ensemble is a listed monument. The Casino belongs to the city's Urban Culture Centre and hosts exhibitions, concerts, craft fairs and civil weddings. The park stretches from the Hungarian Theatre to Cluj Arena, between the Someș and Cardinal Iuliu Hossu Street.
Good to know
- For the classic photo, stand on the south shore of the lake: the Casino appears across the water.
- In summer small boats are rented on the lake; the Chios restaurant is right on the shore.
- The Casino's opening depends on events; check the cultural centre's page before going in.
