It is the forest called 'the most haunted in Europe': a walk of a few hours full of legends, right at the edge of the city.
About the place
The forest covers the crest of Hoia hill between Tăietura Turcului, by the Ethnographic Park, and the Nadăș valley towards Baciu. It is a mixed forest of hornbeam, sessile oak, downy oak, lime and maple, and many trees have twisted trunks. Since the second half of the 20th century stories of lights, UFOs and people who got lost have circulated here and made the forest known far beyond Romania.
The most sought-after spot is Poiana Rotundă, an almost treeless round clearing about 1.3 km west of the map point, inside the boundary of Florești commune. The paths are not marked everywhere and turn muddy after rain.
Good to know
- Go in daylight, with a charged phone and an offline map: paths cross each other and are not marked everywhere.
- Combine the forest with the Ethnographic Park: the museum entrance is about 3 km on foot from the heart of the forest.
- On 21 November 2026 the Spartan Race runs on the Hoia trails; pick another walk that day.
