About the place

In the 18th century this was the best-known inn in Cluj, the 'White Horse'. The building was rebuilt after 1794 and took the name of its ballroom, the 'Redoute', which hosted sessions of the Transylvanian Diet and concerts by Franz Liszt, Johannes Brahms, Béla Bartók and George Enescu. In 1894 the same hall saw the trial of the Memorandum signatories, and in 1897 the city's first film screening took place here.

The museum has been in the building since 1957. The permanent exhibition, opened in 2006, draws on more than 40,000 objects and shows old occupations, crafts (wood, clay, metal, leather, wool), weaving, food and costume from the villages of Transylvania, Maramureș, Crișana and Banat. The museum's open-air section, the Romulus Vuia Ethnographic Park, is in the Hoia Forest.
