The theatre building, designed by the Viennese firm Fellner & Helmer, houses both the theatre and the opera, holds 4.7 on Google from more than 3,000 reviews, and you can see it from inside at an evening performance.
About the place
The theatre was built in the early 20th century by the Viennese firm Fellner & Helmer, which designed dozens of theatres across Central Europe, and opened in 1906. Today the same building houses the Lucian Blaga National Theatre and the Romanian National Opera, so plays, operas and ballets alternate on the programme.
At the north end of the square rises the Orthodox Metropolitan Cathedral of the Dormition, built between 1923 and 1933, and in the middle stands the statue of Avram Iancu, from 1993. Around the square you can also see the Palace of Justice, the Palace of Finance and the Prefecture building.
